Whole Vet Corporate Networking Campus Visit - Biogen
Whole Vet and Biogen in Research Triangle Park welcomed over 50 attendees at its April 20, 2017.
The event included:
- Introduction to Biogen: the company, the campus, and the industry.
- Speakers and panelists : veterans and non-veterans providing valuable information to help transitioning service member families, veterans that are already working in the civilian workforce, and veteran college students from local colleges and universities. The information will be real-world from real-world professionals.
- Hear from individuals that have been where you are, facing a transition either from the military to a civilian career or within their existing civilian career.
This was the first in a series of Military Corporate Campus Networking Visits to members of the North Carolina Veterans Enablement Consortium (NCVEC) led by Whole Vet.
NCVEC was formed in 2014 as a simple effort to bring together like-minded and like-hearted representatives from across Research Triangle Park, NC. Along the way we have made many new friends and momentum has built to do ‘more’ for all or our veterans, active duty service members, and their families.
This event is for veterans, active military, business and community leaders, and anyone with a heart for our military and veterans!

Speaker and Panelist Bios
Gejuan Sweat Batson - Veteran Success Story
Gejuan brings to Biogen a strong background in leadership, over eight years of manufacturing experience and as a former US Naval Officer, a recognized track record of success in many diverse environments. In her current role at Biogen, Gejuan focuses on the production of upstream process media, nutrient and base solutions required for the cell growth of Biogen's drug therapies and contract manufacturing products.
She holds a Masters of Science Management (MSM) graduate degree from Troy University with a concentration in Health Care Management, a BS degree in Oceanography from the United States Naval Academy, a Massage Therapy diploma from Everett College, and is an MBA candidate at NC State University with a concentration in Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Commercialization.
Phil McDuff, VP, Global Engineering, Biogen
Phil has over twenty-three years of experience working in engineering roles in biotech, pharmaceuticals, and specialty chemicals. In his current role at Biogen, Phil is responsible for leading the engineering functions for Biogen (over 290 employees worldwide); to support Biogen's drug therapies and contract manufactured products. He holds a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from Auburn University.
Paul Worsfold, Sr. National Account Manager - Federal Accounts, Biogen
Dynamic and award-winning professional with 25 years of experience generating success for the world’s top pharmaceutical companies. Expertly builds and coaches high-performing sales teams amid rapidly changing environments while generating revenues and results far above quotas and expectations. Expertise in the Federal Arena and in account management.
Confidently able to create and lead initiatives that maximize resources to develop strategies to accelerate growth and optimize product performance. Uses performance management as a tool to consistently develop and promote team members. Demonstrated strong decision-making capabilities and has high emotional intelligence.

Ashley Drugg, Vice President and HR Site Head of Deutsche Bank – Cary
Ashley has more than 15 years leadership experience in Human Resources specializing in business advisory, leadership development and coaching, talent and performance management, and employee relations.
Ashley began her HR career in the Automotive Industry focusing on leadership development and business advisory. Ashley joined DB in 2012 as a HR Business Partner for the Jacksonville, FL campus. In 2014 Ashley joined the Employee Relations team supporting the US Region and in 2016 was promoted to her current role as the HR Site Head in Cary.
Ashley has a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from the University of North Florida and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Jacksonville University. Ashley is passionate about helping people develop and move forward in their careers. She is married with two children. Ashley enjoys spending time with her family and the outdoors.
Chad Cooper, Learning Partner, Operations - Biogen
Chad is a Navy veteran having served for four years as an Intelligence Specialist. He served on the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. He participated in numerous deployments in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, and the Middle East, including Operation Desert Storm in 1991 to liberate Kuwait. Following military service, Chad earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology from East Carolina University. Chad has worked at Biogen for over 15 years, with numerous positions in Manufacturing, Engineering, and Quality Control Management. Chad was a member of the RTP Site Leadership Team for six years, making key business decisions and formulating the strategy for Biogen's largest operations site. Along the way, he attended night school at NC State University to earn his MBA. Chad is currently the Learning Partner for Operations, which includes responsibility for training all of Manufacturing staff at all Biogen plants int he US and Europe.
Ryan Shepard, Supply Chain Performance Manager, Caterpillar
Ryan is a former Marine Corps Captain, serving on active duty from 2002 to 2008 as a Logistics Officer. He earned a BS degree in Management from St. Bonaventure University in 2002 and an MBA from the University of Phoenix in 2013. After leaving active duty in 2008, Ryan transitioned to his civilian career as a buyer for General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, CA. He spent six years with General Dynamics in the Purchasing field with his final position being a Purchasing Supervisor. In 2014 Ryan joined Caterpillar Building Construction Products Division where he serves as the Division's Supply Chain Performance Manager. He is also the chair for Caterpillar's North Carolina Chapter of the Armed Forces Support Network.
Brad Morse, Cisco
Brad is a former US Army Captain who served six years on active duty as a Medical Administrations Officer in the 82nd Airborne and Womack Army Medical Center. He joined Cisco's Employee Services Project Management Office in June 2016. Brad leads projects focused on enhancing the overall user experience as it pertains to support strategies for all Cisco employees. He is also a member of the local Project Management Institute chapter NCPMI, and spends time in supporting its new local Community of Practice for Veterans. He also supports Cisco's annual Veteran Career Transition Day.
Paul Medina, Director, Chief Technology Office, Deutsche Bank
Paul joined the Navy after high school and served four years in the Navy as an Electronics Technician. After extensive training in electronics, he was deployed t a submarine tender the USS Frank Cable in Charleston, SC. There he worked as a nuclear calibration technician in support of the submarine squadron. Immediately after his military service, Pual leveraged his skills as an electronics technician to land a job working for a French company and within 30 days of leaving the Navy he as in Paris, France. A few years later, Paul was again able to leverage his Navy experience to land a job in NYC working in the financial sector and remains in this field today. In 1997, Paul began working at Deutsche Bank on the first rung of the corporate ladder. He has been with the bank for 20 years and progressed to a senior management role. In this capacity, he has remained in touch with his technical background and has a leadership role in the Chief Technology Office.
Biogen is seeking veteran candidates for current openings: Biogen is currently hiring and we have several openings throughout our organization in RTP. We are actively seeking veteran candidates for opportunities in Manufacturing, Quality, IT, Engineering, Facilities, EH&S and many others. We are also looking for veteran students for internship and co-op opportunities. Many of the hiring managers representing these organizations will be present during the event to speak with candidates directly about opportunities in their organizations. If you are curious about joining Biogen or transitioning to a new career in biotech, this will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about the industry and how to make a potential transition to a great career.
